Plumbing FAQs
1000+ five-star reviews
Questions come in waves here, and most follow the seasons. Root-choked drains follow the summer storms, and failed hot water units pile up through the frosty ridgetop winters.
A steady run of pricing and licensing queries arrives year round too.
The answers below cover what locals ask most often. If your question is not here, the full range of what we do is covered at Mount Colah's home page, or you can simply call and ask a plumber directly.

Questions We Hear Around the Suburb
Do you charge just to come out and look at a job?
No. The call out fee is $0, so a licensed plumber can attend, assess the problem and hand you a fixed written price before any work begins, with nothing owed if you decline the quote.
How quickly can you get to an emergency in this part of Hornsby Shire?
A real person answers the phone day and night on (02) 9072 0520, and because the van is usually already working a nearby street, attendance is genuinely fast. We never promise a specific minute count before we know where the job sits. Our emergency plumbing team handles bursts, backups and gas smells around the clock.
Why do drains in the older streets keep blocking no matter how often they are cleared?
Most homes here sit on treed bush blocks beside Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and the original earthenware pipework laid for the 1960s to 1980s houses has grown brittle, so roots re-enter at every cracked joint until the line itself is repaired. Our blocked drains page explains the permanent fixes, including relining.
Should I repair or replace my hot water system?
Much of the local housing stock is now on its second or third unit. Once a tank passes its second decade or needs repeated valve and element work, replacement usually costs less over the following years than another repair. Compare the options on our hot water repair and hot water replacement pages before you decide.
Can you handle drainage on steep, sloping blocks?
Yes. The sandstone ridges and deep valleys of the Hornsby Plateau make pipe falls and runoff management a constant local challenge, and our drainage team designs long runs, pits and dispersal points specifically for this terrain.
Which plumbing jobs legally require a licensed plumber?
Any work on drinking water supplies, sewer lines, gas piping, hot water systems or backflow prevention must be done by a licensed tradesperson, and every job we complete carries compliance paperwork under licence #275278C.
Do you only do emergencies, or can you book planned work?
Planned work is a core part of what we do, from maintenance plumbing checks that catch failures early through to renovations, appliance installs and full hot water upgrades, all booked at a time that suits you.
What warranty comes with your work?
Every job is covered by our Lifetime Labour Warranty, so if the workmanship is ever at fault we come back and make it right at no cost, regardless of how long ago the original job was finished.
Which nearby suburbs do you service?
We work across Asquith, Hornsby, Berowra, Mount Kuring-gai and Hornsby Heights as well, with a dedicated page for each so you can see exactly what we offer on your side of the ridge.
